Since writing my blog post, I have gotten my hands on ASD’s tech policy and am excited to work through it before I do my final project. I did have difficulty this week because I have worked in very tech forward districts that tend to have clear and effective tech policies, so I wasn’t sure at the outset what I was supposed to learn from this topic. However, I did enjoy discovering through the research both the types of formats and topics to include, especially high need topics that I never thought about (like teacher evaluation). I also enjoyed the emphasis on working with all stakeholders and how important it is to involve the community, and not just parents, but also local businesses and other entities I wouldn’t have thought to include.
Unfortunately I missed the Twitter chat due to a misunderstanding around the time. However, I did go back and read through the conversation and I also responded to the questions. While my responses were not able to inform others’ learning, I did appreciate the process because it got me thinking in a way that helped me to find focus with this topic. I also gained a greater understanding of the topic through my peers’ responses. I also learned a lot through my peers’ blog responses. I really liked Brian’s approach that we should focus on what we can do, not what we can’t do, and I love how Genevieve and I had almost all the same sources but approached them with such different perspectives. I appreciated Gerald’s groundedness in his experiences with his own district’s policy, as well as his discussion of policy by categories- this document is daunting! I appreciated Kayla’s focus on innovation and Melissa’s point that we have to plan for the future by not just focusing on devices. Douglas’s call for money to test tech on “excited teachers” made me laugh because I am always willing to be that guinea pig, and it has produced some great results that I have shared with my district, both with the tech department and in staff inservices. When considering the part of the essential question that asked, how can I help?, I never considered that as a way I could contribute to the process. Last but not least, I was left with a question posed by Gerald: how can districts effectively disseminate the information in the tech plan so that all stakeholders are aware of them? They really don't do us a lot of good if no one knows they're there. ASD just fixed the link to their tech policy so I plan to do some careful reading this weekend!
