This week has been a little bit confusing for me. The last couple years I have been looking into the flipped classroom model more and more and this assignment gave me time to really research and process the pros, cons, results, and challenges. I am pretty sold on the model, but I have never considered how problematic it is for teachers of literature. I used to also be a math teacher and I think the potential for a math class is limitless, but I do see substantial challenges for my English classes, especially since next year two of them will be taught using Socratic seminar. Which I guess leads back to what is actually the tradition English class model, where students read at home (or don't) and come to class prepared to discuss (or don't). I was hoping the flipped classroom model would have more solutions, not pose more problems. However, I really like the idea of using this model to guide students to really become self-directed and to have a classroom that is student-led.
I really enjoyed the format of the topic this week (choice) and reading everyone's blogs to see their choices and rationale in this jigsaw-like activity. While I see the flipped classroom as a valuable model, I also enjoyed learning so much about Genius Hours and how they could be beneficial to our students. I just don't see the Genius Hour working quite so well with high school classes since I only have them for 50 minutes a day. All in all, I really enjoyed learning about these topics from my research and my peers.
