I have admit that, after reading everyone’s blog posts and a number of articles about the topic, I do not see the value of 3D printers in my classroom. However, I did read my peers’ blogs yearning to find their take on the importance of 3D printing in school because I truly wanted to be converted. I appreciated the link Sara and Josie both made between 3D printing and the growth mindset, and I agree with Sarah that we need to be preparing our students for “jobs that do not yet exist.” I also really enjoyed Melissa’s video about at-risk youth and 3D printing and I appreciated the numerous comments about the benefits of 3D printers for engagement, hands-on learning, STEM, and real-world problem solving. However, I remain with Douglas, that we are sometimes just trading slower computers for faster computers.
That being said, I do think the English class could partner with another class using a 3D printer for some cross-curricular learning. Maybe they could build print sets for books we are reading or something like that, but I would need to work with a teacher who feels very comfortable with the technology and could help me to brainstorm its usefulness. And by the way, I was glad to see Gerald’s post and the comments below it relating to the printing of food. Glad I’m not the only one who finds it intriguing.
